1/2 Price Day At Goodwill

Today was 1/2 price day at Goodwill, and it was a zoo, but I did find some neat treasures.

Three candlesticks. Kind of a bronze finish and I loved the detail and different sizes.

Really pretty detail with the leaves and carvings. $4.00 for all three.

Old world planter with pretty country scene on both sides. $2.00 (not bad)

Basket to hang on the wall. For $1.00 I think it will work great when I redo the breakfast room, or maybe even on the patio.

A planter full of mums. Perfect color and in really good shape. $1.50

Next was a bag full of foliage. It was stapled together and all I could see was the feathers and orange, but for $1.50 It was full of fall colors.

When I opened it up, there was a treasure trove of goodies inside. I sorted them by type and color and had a real bargain. Perfect colors to go with my familyroom redo.
Love the oranges flowers, berries and wreath. (I think a lot of these things came from the Dollar Tree, but it was still a bargain.)

    Lime green flowers and berries.

Orange and mustard gold foliage and berries.

Quite a few feathers and some of them really long.

I thought this was a ton of fun and all of this for only $10.00.

Friday I went to my favorite discount fabric store and found some more fabric for the familyroom redo. A solid orange to go with my orange print, a mustard gold silk and some trims.

It's still about 6 or 7 weeks until I can move all the furniture around, but I can start making pillows and gathering together some of the accessories I want to use in the room. Planning is half the fun anyway. I see an old world theme starting to emerge.

Hope you are all having a fun day.

Favorite Things-Vintage Cake Saver & Mary's Cake

Today I am joining Laurie @ Bargain Hunting and chatting with Laurie for Favorite Things Saturday. Be sure to visit her and see all the fabulous treasures everyone is showing.

This is a post that I did last summer, but since this is one of my favorite things and the cake I make to go with this vintage cake saver is perfect for summer, I thought I would repeat it again.

Do any of you remember going to your grandmothers or a favorite friends house and seeing one of these wonderful cakesavers? This one belonged to my Aunt Hazel and everytime you would go to visit her she always had this cakesaver sitting on the counter and it always had something wonderful inside that she had just baked. Hers was the kind of house that always smelled so good and you were always so hungry when you were there. You know that kind. She spent hours and hours teaching me how to cook, and always praised you no matter how bad you messed up. She even forgave that I never could learn how to make bread. So needless to say one of my favorite things is this wonderful cakesaver and her favorite recipe for a cake that tastes just like summer. This wonderful cake has lemon, orange, pineapple, coconut and almond. It just melts in your mouth.

It makes 3 very light and fluffy layers.

And the icing is a cooked one just full of pineapple and coconut. Yum

She always put it in a pie pan to save every drop of icing she always said.

Then in it would go into her wonderful cakesaver.

Of course she would cut you a piece, and sometimes a really big one.

Whenever I make this cake, I always use her cakesaver and the fabulous cake comb with the baklite handle that she used. Sweet memories of a very neat Aunt and childhood. Her recipe was her mother's and it is called "Mary's Cake. Please enjoy.

    1 1/2 c. sugar - 1/2 c. shortning - 3 eggs - 2 c. flour - 3 tsp. baking powder
    1 c. milk - 1 tsp. vanilla - 1/2 tsp lemon juice - 2 tsp. orange peel - 1/2 tsp. almond. Grease and flower 3 8" pans and bake at 350 for 20 to 25 min.

Icing - 3 well beaten eggs - 2 c. sugar - sm. can crushed pineapple - 1 c. coconut. Cook until thick, add 2 tbl. butter, beat until butter melts. Let cool and then frost layers.

I am also joining The Tablescaper for Summer Sundays. Be sure to stop by and see all the summer fun.

Thanks for stopping by, I always enjoy the visit.

Foodie Friday - Bacon Quiche Lorraine

Today I am joining Michael @ Designs by Gollum for Foodie Friday.

Yesterday I showed you a tablescape for Sunday Brunch and said we would be serving Bacon Quiche. This is a favorite recipe that I love to use. The best part is you can have the bacon cooked in advance, the onions chopped and the cheese shredded , so when you come home from church it goes together in a snap. It is so good and I know you will truly love it.

    Quiche Lorraine

Pastry for a 9 inch pie.

12 slices bacon, crisply fried and crumbled
    1 cup shredded Swiss Cheese
1/2 cup fine chopped green onions
    4 eggs
    2 cups half and half
    1/4 tsp. salt
    1/8 tst. pepper

Sprinkle bacon, cheese and onion in pastry lined pie plate. Beat eggs slightly, beat in remaning ingredients. Pour egg mixture into pie plate. Cook uncovered in 425 oven 15 minutes.
Reduce oven temp. to 300. Cook uncovered until knife inserted halfway between center and edge comes out clean, about 30 minutes longer. Let Stand 10 minutes before cutting. 6 generous servings.

This recipe is from Better Homes and Gardens Cookbook, dated 1982. It really does have some really good basic recipes. I use it all the time along with my 1953 American Woman Cookbook.

Thanks so much for stopping by and be sure to visit Gollum to find some fabulous recipes. I know you will love them.

Ideas for Changing the Family Room

This is what our family room has looked like for quite a while. The table top accessories have changed a dozen times, but the plaid sofa was always what I hated. Well that's going to be solved. This sofa is going to my son as soon as his new home is ready and I'm moving one in from the living room. So it's time to play.

    Changes I want to make.
    1. Bring in beige sofa from the living room.
    2. Change existing drapes to hang straight on rings. (not tied back)
    3. New color scheme. I'm thinking orange, blue and lime green.
    4. Wicker chair is being swapped out for another leather one. (also from the living room)

    Some of my ideas

I am crazy about orange all of a sudden and when I saw this fabric on someone's site recently it reminded me that I had some that I bought about a year ago. Sure enough I dug through my fabric stash and there it was. Lime green, and navy blue with this fabric looks so bright and cheery.

This is the drapery fabric and it's the same color as the sofa. The walls are a cream color.

Since I am using orange, yellow and lime in the living room and the kitchen/breakfast area, this helps everything to flow.

I really want to use some of my blue and white pieces in here. The picture above the sofa has blue in her dress and I have a rug with blue in it in the breakfast area.

So, what do you think? Any suggestions, critiques or comments?

Thanks so much for stopping by, I always appreciate your visits.

Tablescape Thurs. - Sunday Brunch

Thanks to Susan @ Between Naps On The Porch we have another fun day to play with our dishes. Be sure to visit her to see some fabulous tablescapes.

Since I found treasures at GW last week, of course I had to play with them. I thought my new placemats and napkins would be perfect for our Sunday Brunch. Bacon Quiche, Orange glazed cinnamon rolls, coffee and juice. Perfect for after Church.

For the centerpiece my little French Chef and my chicken wire cloche with a candle helped set the mood.

Love the placemats. So cute with the tab for the napkin and pocket for the stainless. I'm using my Pfaltzgraph Village every day dishes. The chefs plate I found at Fry's Grocery. They are HD Designs.

Mugs for coffee or tea, and juice cups. I think I have every piece that was ever made for these dishes. I've had them over 30 years and still love them.

Cream and Sugar if you like.

Salt and pepper to suit your taste.

Small plate for the Orange glazed cinnamon rolls.

Perfect setting and meal for hungry tummies after church.

Thanks so much for stopping by, I always look forward to your visits.

P.S. I will post the recipe tomorrow for Foodie Friday.

Goodwill Was Loaded - I Found Great Stuff

I had such a great time at Goodwill today. When I drove by on Saturday there were about 10 cars all lined up to make donations. Well, I was out and about today so I thought I would stop in and see if there were any goodies. Just as I walked in they were unloading cart after cart of goodies. I got first pick. How cool is that.

Look at this wonderful picture. Love the shape and the detail. It is really huge, what a great treasure.

I found this same canister set for me in green last week, then my son said he would like to have one, so today there was this one in blue. How perfect.

Look at this sweet little bottle. Flat on one side, rounded on the other and such a cute little pour spout and handle.

It's oval in shape. Now this will be wonderful with something in it for my kitchen counter.

Love this precious dish. Such beautiful detail.

Just look at the berries and leaves. Isn't it just wonderful.

Lifts and columns. How fabulous is that. Love the crackled finish.

Just look at the beautiful detail. I can think of a million ways to use these.

Today was Senior Day and 25% off, so I got everything for $16.90. How cool is that.

Thanks for stopping by, I really love your visits.
